Introduction

The exercises in this section are designed to encourage students to think about their motives for continuing their studies on to higher education (HE), and about their future life and career ambitions.  It also tests their knowledge and understanding of the realities of HE study.

Contents of this section

Unit 1:  What do you want from higher education

This unit will help students explore their motives for higher education.  This is important, as around one in four students withdraw from their courses before completion of their studies.  The reasons for this are varied, but unclear motivations for study at this level, and/or unrealistic expectations of higher education are significant factors

Unit 2: Career choice

As seen from Unit 1, career choice is an important element of student motivation for higher education. Whilst there is some evidence that the learning, career choice and career progression of young people is strongly influenced in the short term by serendipity and expedient 'who-you-know' opportunity (Hodkinson 2004), there is still a need to encourage young people to visualise a long term career pathway that broadens from stereotypes of what constitutes a 'good job'

Unit 3: How much do you know about higher education?

This sections contains a number of questions to fill out.
